Local Clubs' Prizelifting at Festival

D M Phillips picture shows Iain McEwan & Fran Norris (Director) with the Atholl Players trophies

ONCE AGAIN Highland Perthshire teams distinguished themselves at the annual SCDA One Act Play Festival in Birnam at the end of February.

Atholl Players won the Hunter Trophy for Best in the Festival, as well as the new Frank Martin Award for the best performance of a play depicting Scottish Life and Character. It was particularly appropriate that Frank’s old club should win this award in the first year of its existence.

BIPS Youth from Birnam came second in the Youth section with Battle In The Hills by George McKay Brown.

The Steamie, directed by Gilbert Price, with Sandra Batty, Liz Campbell, Kathy Pearson, Donald McCallum and Ann Ruddy, was awarded The Stirling Trophy for Best Moment of Theatre, for the telephone scene.

The adjudicator was John Durnin and prizes were presented by Helen Logan - both of Pitlochry festival Theatre.

Youth Group Successes

Pat Zich once more directed the Youth Section of Aberfeldy Drama Club through to the next competitive stage in Arbroath - where it then went on further to be re-presented with The Morton Trophy and progress to the association’s Scottish Youth Finals in the Orkney Arts Theatre, Kirkwall on 25 June.

The youngsters performed “Free to Be – You and Me” by Marlo Thomas which, through text and music, deals with the issue of the stereotyping of girls and boys. Cast members were Emma Carmichael, Ealasaid Ferguson, Craig Hamilton, Deborah Kerr, Roddy MacCaskill, Archie McCallum, Lesley Meek, Iain Murch and Jocelyn Timperley. Natasja Keating was stage manager and Music Directors were Gordon Murch and Frances McCallum.

At the Arbroath competition in March, the Splinters Youth Theatre from Shetland, Stromness Drama Club and Carnoustie Theatre Club were the other Northern Division groups taking part. Adjudicator on that day was Ron Nicol from Fife.
