Urgent Town Centre Road Closures Advised

Scottish Water's repairs to a damaged sewerage pipe at the junction of Dunkeld St/Chapel St/The Square under the mini roundabout in Aberfeldy is scheduled to close town centre roads for one week. The Square will be closed to through traffic and vehicles will be diverted away from this area. The start date for the work is Monday 4 September, with the traffic management systems being initiated during the late afternoon/evening of Sunday 3 September.

Westbound Traffic

It will be possible to allow west bound traffic to continue along Dunkeld St and turn right into Chapel St but there will be signs out discouraging this and advising local traffic to use alternative routes.

Temporary traffic signals will be required to control the flow of traffic at Dunkeld St/Chapel St junction as only sufficient road width for single lane operation. This will affect the bus stops in Chapel St so the Council is in discussion with Public Transport on this situation. Parking restrictions will also be required in Chapel St & Dunkeld St – the exact extent of which will be established on site. It seems likely that Dunkeld St will only require suspension of the short parking area between the Pelican crossing and the yellow lined area at the Post Office.

Eastbound Traffic

This will need to be diverted away from the area via Taybridge Road and Taybridge Terrace. This may cause problems as access to Bank St will be required for the businesses and properties between there and the actual point of closure (west of access to parking areas in the Square).

Bus Stop

There will also be an effect on Public Transport, as the bus stop adjacent to the amusement arcade will need to be relocated farther along Chapel St (nearer to Taybridge Terrace) to allow sufficient stacking room for traffic waiting at the temporary traffic signals.

C'llr Ken Lyall advises that, unfortunately, due to the nature of the problem, it will not be possible to follow the normal consultation procedure for a closure with such a high impact on the local area. "If Scottish Water does not react urgently there is a high risk of untreated sewerage over spilling onto the footways and carriageway of the Square outside the Coop. In light of that it is imperative we treat this as an ‘urgent’ situation."
