Latest Accident Prompts Renewed Call for A9 Dualling

COMMENTING after three people were seriously injured in a head-on collision on a single carriageway stretch of road near Blair Atholl on Sunday 7 May, local MSP John Swinney described this latest accident as a wake-up call for upgrading the A9 to dual carriageway status
The MSP said: "It is a minor miracle that nobody was killed in such a serious head-on collision. There has been a desperate number of these crashes on the A9 and this will sadly continue until the road is made a safe road.
"We know the A9 is the most dangerous trunk road in Scotland. We know the structure and layout of the road, with long bends, creates the conditions in which
drivers make mistakes. We also know that drivers get confused between whether they are on a singlecarriageway or a dual carriageway. All of these features require urgent action to improve the safety of the road.

"There is a consultation underway at present about the future of the road and I encourage as many local organisations as possible to make a submission arguing for an upgrade to dual carriageway status. I hope the Transport Minister will pay close attention to the fact that the dangerous record of the A9 is continuing and urgent action is needed to tackle the problem. Unless the road is made into a dual carriageway the problem, sadly, will continue."
