Spring Bulb Exhibition Opens New Season

The Scottish Rock Garden Club will sponsor monthly exhibitions in the David Douglas Pavilion this year starting 6 April with an exhibition on Spring Bulbs.

Extensive pictures of Bulbs will be housed in the David Douglas Exhibition and will be supplied by Ian Young, ex-President of the SRGC and a frequent panelist on Radio Scotland’s The Potting Shed and The Beechgrove Garden - with Jim McColl . On the SRGC website at www.srgc.org.uk he has a world-renowned weekly bulb diary, and is one of the most important bulb growers in the world.

Other programmed exhibitions for this summer will be - The Himalayas, European Alpines, Cypripediums, China and Laurence Greenwood Paintings.

19 April is a date for the diaries of keen growers of Asiatic Primula's as John Mattingly from Cluny Gardens is taking a workshop in the Explorers Garden - it’s your chance to learn from one of the best growers of Asiatic Primula's in the Britain!

This will be followed on 25 April with a workshop on Composting. Come along and see how to depose of your Kitchen waste in a Greenway! And help your garden.

Moving into May - "Fish Box Troughs" is another programmed workshop led by Ian Young, 14 May. Ian will teach how to recycle and transform old polystyrene fish boxes into beautiful stone troughs. He will also talk aboutwhat can beplanted in them and how to look after them.

When Explorers' Garden opens 6 April for the summer season, lots of Primula's will be in flower – expect drifts of Blue and red drumstick Primula denticulata. Also the rare Primula whiteii which was collected by George Sherriff will be in flower. Last year, a number of these rare plants were donated from Pitlochry to the Botanics in Edinburgh.

Whether participating in a workshop or just visiting the Garden and Spring bulb exhibition, Explorers – The Scottish Plant Hunters Garden looks forward to welcoming visitors.

Look out, too, for volunteer opportunites. To find out more about how to get involved, contact Julia: 01796 484600 or email Julia.corden@pitlochry.org.uk
