Support for Local Museum
A £1,000 cheque from Blair Atholl Area Tourism Association was presented recently to John Cameron of Blair Atholl’s Country Life Museum. The sum is to assist in the museum with its preparations for the Scottish Museums Council’s accreditation scheme.
First opened in 1981, the museum was set up as a Trust in 2003. John Cameron of Monzie, whose family has lived in the Blair Atholl area since the 1750’s, realised that he had stories which he grown up with and - more recently - photos that would be lost if he did not do something about it.
John said: “It really all started unconsciously back in 1971. I went to a farm sale and purchased a whole lot of stuff that no body wanted, but I felt it was important historically. So I put it in the loft, as one does, much to my wife Janet’s dismay.” He continued “It just seemed to grow from there. I am pleased to say that, today, I am one of the museum’s trustees and I have a team of other local people helping in the running of the museum.” |

Lin Muirhead, chairperson of the Blair Atholl Tourism Association, said: “We are delighted to give support to our little museum. We are very lucky having someone who has dedicated so much time and expense to preserving our local history and knowledge. The Atholl Country Life Museum is a real asset to our community and is well worth a visit for all those who not have taken the time to wander round. Many interesting practises and stories from the past will be discovered.”
Atholl Country Life Museum in Blair Atholl is Highland Perthshire’s only museum. It has three rooms full of tools, furniture, stories, and photographs depicting people and customs of the past. It also contains the old Trinafour Post Office, which is fascinating in its own right. The museum is open daily from June to September.
