Riding for the Disabled

The Breadalbane Group has just finished the Summer Session at Tomtayewan, Aberfeldy. Our eight riders have made good progress and look very smart in their new protective clothing. The riders enjoy the activity and, as the weeks go by, confidence increases and this year some have almost reached the trotting stage.

During the season our volunteer helpers have attended a specialised Training Day, completed a One Day First Aid Course to renew their Certificates and had Lesley Furnell, a Physiotherapist in Therapeutic Riding, attend two sessions to teach and advise.

The ponies have all behaved impeccably. One of our regulars, Aigus of Litigan, Jennifer Valentine’s home-bred, home-produced 12 year old Highland gelding, went down to the recent Royal Highland Show and came to the last session sporting his two Rosettes to show the children! (Ridden by Clare Valentine he won the under 14hh Ridden Highland Class and went on to become Reserve Champion overall.)

We finished the Session with a mock Cross-Country ride on the hill and a very enjoyable picnic despite the showery weather and having to shelter in the stable!

Funds Raised for RDA

The outstanding sum of £850 was handed over to the group treasurer of the local branch of Riding for the Disabled as a result of a sponsored ‘Follow the Tay’ swim organised by Greg Redfern and Colleen Blair of Aberfeldy Recreation Centre.

The Group is enormously grateful to Effie Morrison, Kathleen Douthwaite, Pam Stirling, Alison Riley, Alison Parmley, Lara Fenwick, Angela Stallard, Clare Thomas, Ernie Hamilton, Phil Steadman, Greg Redfern and Colleen Blair for the many miles they swan and for gathering such generous sponsorship for the local charity.
