Victoria Park Improvements - Update

THE PLANNED upgrade of Victoria Park in Aberfeldy will reach another crucial milestone in later October when plans for the upgrading scheme will be put out to tender. It is anticipated that the £1/4 million contract will be awarded at the beginning of December, with work being scheduled to start on site in January 2007.

The final, detailed plan was presented to the Friends of Aberfeldy Parklands Group at its open meeting on the 9 October, almost a year since the Group was first constituted.

“Hard Graft”

“It has been 12 months of hard graft for the small but committed committee. Included in the group’s activities has been a programme of extensive community canvassing and detailed consultation with P&K Council, the Friends’ chairman Brian Stone told Comment

Local Fundraising

“In addition to the central funding from P&K, the group itself has raised a considerable sum of money to add to the pot. Special recognition should go to the Aberfeldy Common Good Fund and to the local Rotary Club for their generous contributions to the project.

“The result of their hard work will soon be rewarded with a park development that the whole community can take a pride in and enjoy,” he added.

Play Area

High on the list of priorities for the park is the long overdue upgrade of the children’s play area. The park’s main entrance will get a revamp, including some new pathwork and the park’s secondary, eastern entrance will also be upgraded.

A much enlarged and enhanced picnic area will be created which will include a shade sail. Park seating will be increased and new plantings developed, existing plantings will be thinned out and generally brought under control.

Under a separate funding package permanent cricket practice nets are to be erected in the north east corner of the park.

Involvement Opportunity

Friends' Group member Fiona Fraser told Comment: "It’s still not too late to get involved and put your opinion forward. Our AGM is on Monday 6 November at the Locus Centre in Aberfeldy at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome. There is no pressure to be on the committee – we just would like to hear from you what you think of the plans."
