China Trek for Cancer Charity

INSPIRED by the cancer relief fundraising trek made last year to Kilimanjaro by Karen Banyard (reported in Comment), two ladies are setting themselves a similar personal challenge. Gill Hutton and Linda Ford will be taking part in a 6 day trek along a section of the Great Wall of China to raise funds and awareness for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

“The section we will be trekking is to the north of Beijing and is across a very remote area with a lot of steep climbs and sharp descents, trekking each day for approximately 7-8 hours,” Linda told Comment.

As some parts of the Wall are now protected, they will not always be walking upon it, but along the side it, so the terrain will be very varied.

“We will be rough camping each night, except for one night when we stay with a Chinese family in one of the rural villages. We have been told that this is a difficult challenge!” added Linda.

They report that their fundraising is going well, and they are both getting into the challenge of getting fit in the hills around Aberfeldy. To take part in the challenge they each have to raise £2,700 each.

They held a thrift shop in the Square in Aberfeldy, have done bag packing at both Pitlochry and Aberfeldy Co-Op and Linda challenged herself by going back to teach step aerobics for two 10 week blocks at Aberfeldy Recreation Centre.

“We have still have a couple more fundraising events to conduct and with all this, plus personal sponsorship, we are both getting close to target.

“We have so many people to thank who have supported us in different ways and have been delighted with the response we have received - so a huge thank you to everyone who has helped and given generously,” Linda concluded.

To help sponsor them, both can be contacted at Aberfeldy Cottage Hospital during office hours - 01887 820314
