Wake up to Britain's Biggest Breakfast

PEOPLE throughout Highland Perthshire are being urged to wake up to Britain’s Biggest Breakfast and help raise funds for Cancer Research UK’s vital work. The charity is asking people to organise a breakfast party at any time of any day during March, for family, friends or colleagues.

Parties can be held at home, in the office, at school – or anywhere. All hosts have to do is encourage their guests to make a donation to help Cancer Research UK reach its fundraising target of £225,000.

Last year people all over Scotland joined Britain’s Biggest Breakfast for Cancer Research UK. In Perthshire, the Community School of Auchterarder held a Big Breakfast for staff in 2005 which was a huge success and raised £200. The staff paid for their breakfast and there was a raffle on the day, a decorated "Big breakfast cake" was also auctioned off. The School is once again putting its plans in place to raise even more in 2006.

Elsewhere, kind hearted staff at a building society created a bed and breakfast theme for their event by spending the whole day in pyjamas. They served tea and coffee to customers to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Cancer Research UK Community Fundraiser for Perthshire, Dorothy Rodger told Comment: “Britain’s Biggest Breakfast is a great way to have fun and raise money for Cancer Research UK at the same time. You can hold your breakfast party anytime, any place, and anywhere throughout March.”

Dorothy added: “Breakfast is such an important meal and, with so many tasty foods available, what better way to kick-start your day than with a breakfast party?”

Backing & Inspiration

Celebrity nutritionist Amanda Ursell is backing Britain’s Biggest Breakfast.

Amanda, a television presenter and author, said: “I’m really pleased to be supporting Britain’s Biggest Breakfast – what a great excuse to get together for some good food, as well as raising funds for an important cause.

“Experts believe around a third of all cancers are linked to diet, obesity and alcohol, so it’s important to make sure you’re getting your five daily portions of fruit and veg – and breakfast is a good place to start. You can really get your body going in the morning with a healthy meal, which will give you a boost of nutrients and mean you’re less likely to snack on unhealthy foods before lunch.”

Delicious, simple recipes from celebrity chefs are available from www.cancerresearchuk.org/breakfast. Mouth-watering dishes include Raymond Blanc’s toasted oat milk porridge with dried fruits or Sophie Grigson’s Bircher muesli.

As well as raising vital funds for research into cancer, Britain’s Biggest Breakfast is encouraging awareness of how eating a healthy breakfast, as part of a balanced diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables, can help reduce your risk of cancer.
