A Wheen of Mod Successes for Gaelic Choir

TWO MEMBERS of the Aberfeldy and District Gaelic Choir scooped the Duet Cup singing competitions at the Perthshire and Angus Provincial Mod over the weekend of 10 June.

No strangers to success, May Brown and Gilliain MacDonald enchanted the audience with a soulful rendition of a distraught lover’s lament “O Righ nan Dul”.

In second place were two other Choir members, Brian Owen and Peter MacIntosh, singing the lovesong “Sine Bhan” with great feeling.

The four sing together in a quartet called “Fuaimeach” (Gaelic for “noisy”) - pictured above - and they came joint first with their Stirlingshire competitors from Alva “Gleusda” (Gaelic for “accomplished) in the quartet competition. Adding to this foursome’s success, Brian Owen came second in the men’s solo section.

In the Choral singing four-part harmony “Puirt a’ Beul” (mouth music), the Aberfeldy and District Gaelic Choir came third, after Taynuilt and Cumbernauld. The Westcroft Trophy, awarded to Choirs singing two own-choice songs in four-part harmony, was won by Cumbernauld, with Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association a close second, and the Aberfeldy choir in third place, just four points below the winners.

Top Music Marks Prize

But all was not lost for the local choir, which shared a trophy for overall top music marks. “We shared first place in music the previous week at the East Kilbride Mod,” said Conductor Frances McCallum, “and we’ve done it again in our home town! It’s great to know we’re on the right tracks, and heading in the right direction for this year’s National Mod in Dunoon! But there’s lots to improve upon, and we are now back to practices on Monday, as usual.”
