Chuckle Muscles’ Discovered by Gaelic Choir

Members of the Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir enjoyed an unusual workshop in mid Aigust with voice coach Val Munro, who encouraged them to learn how to sustain their breath by discovering their “chuckle muscles” below their ribs!

Using a variety of exercises and voice-training techniques, Val taught the Choir members how to increase their vocal range, the importance of good posture and how to have what she calls a “happy larynx”!

Val, who works for the South Edinburgh Healthy Living Initiative in Active Lifestyle Development, has held several workshops with the Gaelic Choir having been a visitor to the Aberfeldy area for the past twenty years.

“The Choir is so receptive to my suggestions” said Val. “It’s a sheer joy to be here with people I now consider to be my friends. They are so keen to know how to improve their own singing technique, and over the years I’ve noticed a huge improvement in the Choir’s sound, it’s much more confident. Of course a lot of the credit must go to Frances McCallum, who is an excellent and enthusiastic leader.”

The workshop was held as part of the choir’s gearing up for October’s National Mod in Dunoon.

The Choir will be holding a free pre-Mod concert on Monday 16 October at 8pm in the Aberfeldy New Church Centre in Taybridge Road, to which all are welcome.
