Gaelic Choir October Concert

THAT FIRST HINT of frost in the air, and a tinge of gold and red in the trees, means we can look forward to the splendours of autumn but, for Aberfeldy and District Gaelic choir, they herald a very busy spell of hard work and intensive practising, in the lead up to the National Mod.

The final practice will take the form of a concert in Aberfeldy Parish Church, to which all are cordially invited. This year the Royal National Mod is to be held in Dunoon, and the choir members are looking forward to the competitions.

“We had a very successful day at the Provincial Mod in Aberfeldy, in June, when we won the Puirt a’ Beul, and our first visit to the East Kilbride Mod, saw us achieving the highest music mark for the four part choral competition, and we were first equal for the Puirt a’ Beul,” said Frances McCallum, conductor of the choir.

Four members of the choir make up a quartet called “Fuaimeach”, (meaning ‘noisy’), and they, too, were first prize winners at the Aberfeldy Mod. Gilliain MacDonald, May Brown, Peter MacIntosh and Brian Owen not only sing in the quartet, but they also enter duet competitions, and Brian and Gilliain sing solo. May and Gilliain’s duet won in Aberfeldy, but they are changing partners for the trip to Dunoon, and May will be singing with Brian, and Gilliain with Peter.

Several members of the choir went to the Mull Mod in September and, said May Brown: “We had a wonderful time. The weather was superb, and we enjoyed meeting the other choirs and adjudicators, in an informal atmosphere. Winning the quartet competition was a bonus!”

The evening with the choir promises to be one of much interest and variety, and one to look forward to. “Last year we performed a concert before our trip to Spain, and we like to have a chance to air our Mod songs for all our loyal local supporters,” said choir president, Lou Radford.

The concert, in Aberfeldy Parish Church, will be at 7.30pm on Monday 16 October. There will be no charge for admission, but a collection will be taken for Friends of Aberfeldy Cottage Hospital, and Dalweem Comfort Fund, and no advance booking will be necessary.
