50th Year Twinning Trip to Aschaffenburg

The Robert Wiseman Dairies Vale of Atholl Junior and Parade Pipe Bands recently enjoyed a trip to Perth’s twin town Aschaffenburg to celebrate 50 years of twinning to take part in Culture Week.

A party of 40, led by Pipe Major Scott Oliphant and Drum Majors Kenny Forbes and Alister Walker, were welcomed upon arrival in Aschaffenburg by Pipe Major Achim Fuchs and Udo Schimdt of the Spessart Highlanders.

The main event was the Tattoo held in the square outside the castle. A variety of bands marched down the cobbled street to the square with the massed pipe bands bringing up the rear. The highlight of the evening was the rousing rendition of Highland Cathedral with the brass and pipe bands for the finale.

“We entertained the crowds the following day with street parades in extremely hot weather and enjoyed a barbecue put on by our German friends from the Spessart Highlanders,” reported Scott Oliphant. “Oberburgmeister Klaus Herzog came along to thank us for coming to help celebrate the twinning and acknowledged the fact that three of the band - Alister Walker, Gillie McNab and Irralee McNab - had been across with the band 10 years ago when it celebrated 40 years of twinning”.

The band also took in some sightseeing and attended a beerfest.

We are looking forward to having two bands from Aschaffenburg, Melomania and Gaelback, joining us in Pitlochry at our Highland Night on 7 August, and the other bands that are coming over in September,” added Drum Major Alister Walker.

The trip was only made possible through the help of both Perth and Kinross Council and The Cairncross Trust.
