On The Fiddle For 46 Years

At the AGM of the Dunkeld and District Strathspey and Reel Society (DDSRS), held in the Birnam Hotel, Gordon Walker, the current conductor, was presented with a certificate offering Life Membership and was made an Honorary President of the Group.

Gordon first started with the orchestra in 1959 and has been a mainstay of the group throughout his long years of service. Lizbeth, Gordon’s wife, has also played an important part in supporting and taking part in the Society’s events. It is thought that only 3 members in the long history of the group have received this prestigious award.

Gordon dedicates lots of time to preparing music for the concerts. With a real mix of musicians, he selects music which is within the capabilities of all involved. Recent highlights of his association with the DDSRS were the trip to Germany and, most of all, the number of youngsters who have joined up recently.

The Society played recently at Grandtully Hall, to assist in the raising of funds for the Strathtay Boys Club. A packed hall enjoyed an excellent evening and raised almost £500. Thanks go to everybody for the local support at this concert and all the concerts played at this season.

Gatherings recommence on Monday evenings at 7.30pm and are normally in the Royal School of Dunkeld. However Mondays 15 and 22 August will be held in the Birnam Hotel.

The Society invites people to attend its practices and looks forward to welcoming new members and to considering requests to play at various venues. Neil Gonella will continue to offer additional practise to players who feel they will benefit from this on Monday evenings , prior to the start of the gathering.
