Desirable Destination

GWEN SMOLLETT, Manager of First Choice Travel, based in the ASDA store in Perth, proposes Morocco as a

The Kingdom of Morocco is a land rich in mystique and teeming with art and culture. The spice-scented alleyways have all the heady charm of North Africa, while the street cafes and patisseries also reveal a strong French colonial influence. You will be captivated by Morocco’s breathtaking landscape, which is spectacularly diverse, perfectly combined sand and sea, mountains and deserts and colourful souks.

One of the country’s most important cultural centres, Marrakech, is a lively city set against the background of the Atlas Mountains. It is famed for its fragrant roses and thousands of palm trees, as well as for its market stalls and festivals. At night this beautiful gateway to Morocco’s past comes alive beneath the hazy lights of the marketplace, where visitors can be enchanted by the belly dancers and the snake charmers of Djeema el-Fna Square.

The modern resort of Agadir has 10km of golden sand beach and is set in a sheltered bay famed for its clear Atlantic waters, perfect for both swimming and watersports. Agadir offers the massive souk al-Had market, and the reconstructed town of Coco Polizzi’s Medina.

In the evening, entertainment tends to be hotel based but there are a few restaurants and bars. During your stay a “must do” is a chance to experience a camel ride through an oasis.

Royal connections have ensured that golf in Morocco is a national pastime. The facilities are superb and there are no less than twenty courses dotted around the country, many being situated near Agadir.

All of this, combined with excellent hotels and marvellous food, make morocco much more than just your ordinary package holiday destination. The country is such an easy hop from Europe, just over the straits of Gibraltar, into Northern Africa.
· On the coast the weather is tourist friendly all year round. However, between the months of October and April you will find the days and nights a bit cooler.
· Local currency is Moroccan Dirham but it is also recommended to take the US Dollar. It is not possible to change Moroccan currency in the UK, so any currency that you have left should be changed back into sterling before departure.
· Being a Muslim country, certain conventions regarding dress and the consumption of alcohol should be observed to avoid causing offence. In most hotels gentlemen are required to wear long trousers.
· Whilst visiting the many markets haggling is both essential and expected for a variety of items from spices to leather goods and glassware.
